Mercer island mid mod redux

Award winning Remodel for Historical Excellence

While this home had great PNW bones (thanks to original midcentury design by famed architect, Ralph Anderson), this gem needed to slough off its dark, gone to seed era and re-find its vitality. To aid and abet that, a new staircase with solid wood treads routered into a doug fir stringer brings zip with its contrast of surprise (heavy— yet floating!) and was no small feat of craftsmanship. Throughout the stairs and living area walls, custom made wood slats scale the heights (versus pre-fab tamboured panels), but adding gorgeous texture and more fresh take on mid mod luxury. Hot rolled steel fireplaces add cool to the original stone surrounds, and loads of built in storage at dining room, full chef’s pantry, and kitchen help keep the living areas clean & refined. An all new kitchen’s sleek lines, all new finishes, and loads of new windows add the final polish.

We think Ralph Anderson would be delighted to sip whiskey by the fireside, or coffee in the morning light, while taking in the view of modern craftsmanship applied to his uniquely PNW vision. For, in addition to his keen eye for earthy modern design favoring local materials, he himself was a renewer and preserver— having helped lease, renovate, and restore properties in Pioneer Square when it was initially considered as a site for clearance and construction, (the famed “Seattle Hotel” was demolished in 1963 for a parking garage.) It is an honor to work in the same spirit of restoration and renewal to preserve a dream come true.
