Queen Anne Foursquare
This Queen Anne home boasted gorgeous original details, yet lacked the comforts of a modern day abode. It possessed only one bathroom for the many bedrooms located on the 2nd floor and 3rd "attic" story. Access to the attic story was buried in a staircase in a room at a remote corner of the 2nd floor and lacked charm. Blue Sound was contracted to bring better connection to the 2nd and 3rd stories, and to build an additional new, luxurious master bathroom and dressing room as well as an attic bathroom fitted into the eaves of the 3rd story to accommodate the two bedrooms upstairs.
The remodel required careful finish selections to match the existing elegance of the historic early 1900s home. An entry to a former office was walled in, and the space utilized to form a dressing room hallway with closet cabinetry connecting the existing master bedroom to a former corner room. The corner room was then transformed into a luxurious master bathroom suite.
An original toilet from the downstairs basement was relocated to maintain original character, and Blue Sound moved an original mahogany built in to the new location where it serves as a cabinet for towels and sundries. Doors and trim were milled and stained to match original finishes. New flooring was feathered in with an elegant border and painstakingly matched to the original patina. New luxuries such as a soaker tub, rainhead shower, glass enclosure, heated towel bar, and apothecary marble vanity complete the room.
Meanwhile, a new entry to the stair case was created in the main hall, providing better connection between the stories. A new "removable" banister was added to allow for easier install of beds and furniture. The newel was milled to match existing and a "servants' bell" (as you may have seen in "Downton Abbey") provides communication between the 3rd story and the kitchen on the 1st.
On the 3rd story, a carefully crafted bathroom achieves maximum comfort with minimal space. New paint in the bedrooms and hall deliver a final polish to these charming quarters.
