A Seattle Classic Remodeled: Anhalt Architecture
Remodeling Seattle’s finest with sensitivity & freshness
Frederick Anhalt is a renowned figure in Seattle’s architecture, whose famed development company was responsible for some of Capitol Hill’s most beloved apartment buildings. His structures ranged across many historic styles— courtyard Mediterranean apartments, bungalow English Tudor apartments, and most famously, the grand Medieval English apartments situated on Belmont & Boylston. It wasn’t until later in his career, after the financial pressures of the Depression, that he took to developing single family homes, but they too continued his tradition of producing structures of extraordinary quality. This lovely home was such a one, and there are not many.
It was therefore our privilege when the homeowner & their architect, Paul Michael Davis, reached out to Blue Sound Construction to implement a full remodel and addition to this classic cape cod that would honor its heritage.
Work involved shoring up the structure and hopscotch digging out and replacing the existing foundation to improve basement headheight. On the back side of the building, we implemented an addition with a new lovely, light filled stairwell exhibiting high caliber craftsmanship in keeping with an Anhalt build (self performed by Blue Sound craftspeople!) To the northside of the corner lot, we added an outdoor living room, complete with a masonry fireplace. Inside we remodeled the kitchen, several bathrooms, installed fireplace adjacent built-in’s. Our pro photos captured only the outside for the time being; however, the exterior speaks most to the thoughtful joining of history & tradition with architecturally sensitive improvements by way of fine craft. We think Anhalt would delight in the revised home’s cottage & courtyard feel that makes domestic bliss look perfectly at home in its environment.
